2013-2014

This year middle school science launches into a study of our physical world and its laws! Carlisle Christian Academy's 6th, 7th and 8th graders are learning about chemistry, waves, forces and electricity. We love to get our hands dirty and minds engaged with experiments and experiences. Join us here on our blog to see what we are doing in class! You can contact Mrs. Tiday at ctiday@carlislechristian.org.

Ch 4 Test is Tomorrow : )

Physical Science
CH 4 Test review  (also study the other CH 4 worksheet, see previous post)

1.       Explain what is happening in this image:

Include these words:
Radon, Radium, Proton, Neutron, Alpha radiation, Unstable, Nucleus

____An unstable nucleus of Radium will experience alpha decay.  It will break down into Radon, alpha radiation and a nucleus of helium which is made of 2 protons and 2 neutrons.__________

2.     Draw and label the box on the periodic table for the element Oxygen (it is number 8).  Do not use the Periodic Table.  Include these words: atomic number, atomic mass, electrons in their energy levels, atomic symbol.  Note that mine is not labeled because I could not find an image with labels.

3.      Draw  an isotope of the element Nitrogen ( it is number 7)

To make this stable Nitrogen into an isotope... I need to subtract or add a NEUTRON

4.      Explain the concept that this picture illustrates:
Include these words:

Radiation, alpha, beta, gamma, paper, burn, concrete, aluminum, lead

_____Alpha, Beta and Gamma are three types of radiation.  Each of these can cause damage.  Alpha radiation can cause burns on the skin, but the radiation can be blocked by a simple piece of paper.  Beta radiation causes internal damage to cells, but can be blocked by aluminum.  gamma radiation can cause severe damage through out the exposed area.  Gamma radiation can be blocked by concrete or lead.________
