2013-2014

This year middle school science launches into a study of our physical world and its laws! Carlisle Christian Academy's 6th, 7th and 8th graders are learning about chemistry, waves, forces and electricity. We love to get our hands dirty and minds engaged with experiments and experiences. Join us here on our blog to see what we are doing in class! You can contact Mrs. Tiday at ctiday@carlislechristian.org.

Our first Engineering Design Project!

We are completing this project in class (other than the lab report)

Engineering Design Project for Energy Plus!

Due Date:  __Thursday  10-10-13___

The corporation you work for, Energy Plus, is looking for a team of engineers who can develop a unique design.  In 2014, Energy Plus has a contract with Silver Enterprises for a ramp that will deliver a small but expensive silver alloy to a polishing machine in NO LESS than 2 seconds (it it is too hot before that time).  The space available is also VERY limited.  Your goal is to make the delivery correctly 3 out of 3 times in 2 seconds or more at a demonstration this Friday.  Follow the specifications below to be considered for the $79,000 bonus (per person) given to the two engineers chosen by Energy Plus.  The corporation reserves to the right to select engineers from different teams and a design from a third team to establish the super team that will fulfill the contract with Silver Enterprises in 2014.

Specifications:
1.  The ball must stay on the track 3 out of 3 times during the official demonstration.
2.  The ball must reach the bottom of the track without assistance after the initial release.
3.  The ball must arrive at 2 seconds after the initial drop or later.
4.  The completed track must fit into the assigned box with the lid closed to ensure shipping and positioning in the machine.
5.  The materials for track construction are limited to:
a.  2-3 cereal boxes
b.  10 tongue depressors
c.  hot glue
d.  tape (when available)
e.  cardboard tubes
f.   scissors
6.  A project report must be turned in by each person
a.  Project report will follow the format of the Engineering Design Process.  You may type up a new paper if you need more space.
b.  On the back of the report there should be a complete sentence summary of the use of at least two types of energy.  Be clear and be thorough.
c.  Be sure to explain the design improvements that you needed to make when working with the prototype.
d.  Be sure to include your original blueprint even if the final project is significantly different.
