2013-2014

This year middle school science launches into a study of our physical world and its laws! Carlisle Christian Academy's 6th, 7th and 8th graders are learning about chemistry, waves, forces and electricity. We love to get our hands dirty and minds engaged with experiments and experiences. Join us here on our blog to see what we are doing in class! You can contact Mrs. Tiday at ctiday@carlislechristian.org.

Ch13 Ocean's Project

Each student will be decorating a folder like the one below.  It will contain the information on ocean topics such as waves, currents, climate, tides and water chemistry.
I will be looking for the following information as I grade the projects :)

1.    What is a Wave?
a.    What determines the size of a wave?
b.    Draw and label a wave. Include the crest, the trough, the wavelength, and the wave height.
c.    Explain in at least 3 stages why waves crash at the beach.
d.    What was the original source of the energy of most waves?
e.    What is a Tsunami?
2.    Tides
a.    Draw an illustration that shows how gravity causes tides. Label the drawing as appropriate.
b.    Define or illustrate:
                                          i.    Tidal bulge
                                        ii.    Spring Tide
                                       iii.    Neap Tide
c.    How many high tides are there each day?
3.    Chemistry
a.    What is Salinity?
b.    How much salt is there in the ocean?
c.    What would be one good way to illustrate that to a class of young students?
d.    Is there more Carbon Dioxide in the ocean or in the air?
e.    What is the CO2 used for in the ocean?
f.     Is there Oxygen in the Ocean?
4.    Currents and Climate…Choose either one of these and show it on a map
a.    ocean currents (include rubber ducks or Nike, and explain the currents)
b.    El Niño (Explain the causes, frequency and its affects)
