2013-2014

This year middle school science launches into a study of our physical world and its laws! Carlisle Christian Academy's 6th, 7th and 8th graders are learning about chemistry, waves, forces and electricity. We love to get our hands dirty and minds engaged with experiments and experiences. Join us here on our blog to see what we are doing in class! You can contact Mrs. Tiday at ctiday@carlislechristian.org.

CH7 Review Viruses, Bacteria, Protists and Fungi

Life Science
Chapter 7
Review sheet

1.  Short Essay: We did an activity in which we pretended to magnify the tip of a paperclip 10,000 times.  Explain what you learned from this.  You should include these words (blood cell, virus and the width of a DNA strand)

Answers may vary

2.  List 5 facts that are true about viruses
  • They are much smaller than cells
  • They are not alive
  • They have a variety of shapes
  • Some can attack bacteria
  • They use a lock and key system to make them specific for one type of cell
  • They have a protein coat and DNA
  • They can only reproduce within another cell

3.  Briefly explain the ways that each multiplies:

a. Viruses
They attach to a host cell and inject their DNA.  The DNA is taken to the host cell's nucleus where it is copied and the cell is instructed to form baby viruses.  When the cell is full of viruses it explodes.

b. Bacteria
The bacteria can reproduce asexually by splitting in half, sexually by trading some DNA with another bacteria, or in harsh conditions an endospore is formed which will begin to grow and reproduce when the environment is improved.

4.  What does it mean when we say that a virus can hide?  Explain.
A virus can inject itself into a host cell and then combine with the host cell's DNA.  The host would show no signs of having the disease until a trigger, such as stress, causes the virus's DNA to start to reproduce.

5.  If there is no cure for a virus, how do we ever get better?
A person must rely on his/her immune system to fight the virus.  The immune system can be strengthened by resting, eating well (vitamin C), and staying warm.

6.  Choose one video that we watched and explain how it related to our chapter on viruses, bacteria, protists and fungi.

Answers may vary.  Some videos that we watched include:
7.  Which of the following facts are true about Bacteria?
______ They come in four shapes
______ They are eukaryotes
______ They are smaller than viruses
______ They are not alive
___x___ When they are in bad conditions they form endospores.

9.  Draw a picture of a streptococcus
See image at right.

10.  What makes a Protist a Protist?
Protists have a nucleus (eukaryotic) and they are not animals, plants, or fungi.

11. Tell me 3 of the ways that protists can move themselves.  Draw a picture of each.
Cilia (little hairs, right), Flagella (whip-like tail, bottom left) and Pseudopods (false foot, top left)

13.  List 4 characteristics of Fungi
  • Have a nucleus
  • have a cell wall
  • decompose things
  • use spores to reproduce
  • Cause disease: athletes foot
  • Cure disease: Penicillin
